• Fun in Zion National Park

We absolutely loved Zion National Park. We knew it would be one of our favorite spots on our trip. We spent 10 days in Zion and wanted to explore all the areas that we didn’t get to explore on our last west trip.

We spent Father’s Day here and had alot of fun spoiling Eric. Cam made a new recipe which had peanut butter cups in it. It was a huge hit and gone in minutes. We spent the day swimming and relaxing around the resort for Eric’s special day.

We went on a drive to visit Kolob Reservior and packed a picnic lunch that day. The roads were super dusty because of having no rain. That was about the only downfall of the drive to visit that area. If you are visiting Zion National Park and have more than a week there, I strongly suggest taking the time to drive out to this area. It’s beautiful and wasn’t crowded at all. You can even pitch a tent and camp in the area. The rock formations and landscape were beautiful, especially late afternoon.

These picnic lunch boxes were a hit on our trip, too. So easy to pop these boxes in our hiking bags and be able to keep our food dry each day. We placed ice packs up against our boxes and water pouches in our bag and it worked wonderfully.

One of my favorite things to do was to grill out each night and have dinner together outside. We spent alot of time near our Blackstone grill and around a picnic table. Such great memories. Our favorite dinner on this leg of our trip was taco salad on a tablecloth. No plates or utensils needed. The kids LOVED this dinner. I figured it was because no one had to load the dishwasher after in the bus.

After dinner, we decided to head to Springdale to grab some last minute pictures before heading to our next destination. I’ll never forget the beauty of this night. Take me back!

We had to get a picture by the Zion National Park sign as a family in our adventure buddy shirts.

Goodbye Zion….stay tuned to see all the fun we had at Capitol Reef

Zion River Resort is our favorite place. We made sure to make this a stop after it was a favorite resort visit on our last trip.

  • Iceberg Lake

We were in the area hiking so we decided to take on another hike to end our day 1. This hike was at the top of our list only because we’ve seen numerous pictures and blog posts about how amazing this lake is. Iceberg floating in the water…yes, please! Another reason was because I promised Eric and the kids that I would get in the water up to my neck. I’m not a fan of cold water, but decided on this trip that I was going to say “yes” to all the things that would create lasting memories. This was a BIG one. I knew our kids would never forgot this moment and be shocked if I could pull it off. All while planning this trip, this was the running joke about me not getting in the water in Iceberg Lake. I had to prove our kiddos and my hubby wrong.

We started around 3 p.m. and knew that we would need to make it back before dark. The hike was a total of about 10 miles roundtrip. We had already hiked about 4.5 miles that morning so we knew this was going to be a BIG day.

Just to let you know….I GOT IN! IT WAS FREEZING!!!!

Cam, Eric, and I all did. The water was 38 degrees. It was enough to make me speechless and I could hardly stand up. I was in shorts and a tank top and floating on an iceberg with no shoes and snow was CRAZY! Cam and Eric got in to their waists and I went all the way in to my neck. It was probably the most bone chilling thing I’ve ever accomplished. I was SO PROUD of my myself. It was such a highlight to be able to stand on a floating iceberg and take it all in. We spent about an hour at the lake because it was getting late.

It was probably one of the BEST hikes we’ve done as a family. It was tough but so worth it in the end. Take the trip…make the memories. This will forever be a moment that we will cherish as a family. The pictures will never compare to what we saw and experienced in person.

That’s how far we had to swim to get to the closest iceberg. I literally thought I was going to die!

This drink was in my bag and warm. It was cold by the time we left. Great idea, Eric.

Annie was hesitant to get in but she loved to play with the chunks of ice floating all around.

I’ve got to photoshop this person in our picture out. I’ll take care of that later.

This was the last picture of the hike before we left for the night. Thank you God for giving us moments like this as a family.

  • Glacier National Park Day 1

The month of June has gone by so fast. We’ve had terrible reception in Arches, Tetons, and Yellowstone so I am so far behind on posts. I figure once we get back from our trip in August, I will then update all the fun we’ve had at places above.

We are in Glacier and have been here for 5 days. We’ve been exploring this park and the surrounding areas and LOVE IT!

    Many Glacier

We are staying on the west side of Glacier and getting from one side of the park to the other takes quite a bit of time. I recommend doing a split stay if you want to visit both sides of the park. We had vehicle registration passes for each day so we had the area mapped out that we wanted to explore prior to arriving. You need a plan before arriving at this park.

From our campground in Hungry Horse, Many Glacier is 2 hours from here. I scheduled a boat tour for 8:30 with check in at 8:00. We left super early with all of our gear and a packed lunch. The picture below was a first peak at this park. We almost drove the car off the road looking at all the beautiful views while driving to Many Glacier. We also saw a bear that morning and a total of 7 bears that day. A bit too close for our comfort at times. See below.

This bear was 2 feet from my window. We have found on this trip that to see the best wildlife you have to be on the east side or be out early in the morning. We’ve heard from the locals that animals love the cool weather.

This is us at Many Glacier waiting for our boat tour. The views were stunning. Thanks, God!

This boat tour is the oldest boat tour in Glacier.

    http://www.glacierparkboats.com

They were super sweet and very helpful. If you end up in Glacier, take this boat tour. We wanted to see the Grinnell Glacier and this boat ride shaved a few miles off the hike. We were able to see wildlife, hear about the area, and just relax and take in the views. We went on one boat called Chief Two Guns on Swiftcurrent Lake. We then went on a short .2 mile hike to Lake Josephine and rode on the Morning Eagle to the trailhead. On this ride we were able to see a HUGE male moose hanging in the water. It was incredible to see just how BIG these creatures are. We were the perfect distance away.

We hiked for a couple miles to view the Grinnell Lake overlook. We were bummed that part of the trail was closed due to extremely dangerous snow conditions. We were still able to see beautiful views and were able to witness a momma grizzly and two baby bears cross the path that we were on. We were a safe distance away and it was so magical watching the three together. Each time the momma grizzly moved, the babies would follow closely behind. The way they played with each other was unlike anything we’ve ever witnessed. They would knock each other over, hang from branches and pounce on each other. It was so cute!

After seeing the view above, we decided to hike the couple extra miles down to the lake to eat our picnic lunch. We walked through the most freezing cold water to sit on the best island to eat. Waterfalls surrounded us wherever we looked and the most beautiful waterfalls all around us.

See the video below. This same bear and her cubs came down to our picnic spot and surprised us. We were eating and enjoying the view when all of the sudden she appeared out of nowhere. We were on an island with no place to go and she was heading straight for us. All the signs say to not run from a bear, but this was my first reaction. Thankfully Eric was able to talk some sense in to me and I just stood still. They say that you need to stay three bus lengths or more from bears. We were within 25 feet and not by choice. Yikes! We’ve shared this video with so many people and watched it so much. This blessing made Glacier show off in a way that no other park has. Our hearts were forever changed and now we all want to move here.

Cam loves to walk in freezing cold water. He always goes to the best spots and takes the best pictures.
Bridges like these are everywhere. We’ve crossed lots of these with beautiful waterfalls below.
Look at this view! Makes me tear up every time.
  • Capitol Reef National Park

We heard from many people that we should visit this national park. We decided to make the few day stop since we were only a few short hours away.

Before we arrived at the campgrounds, we always put the address in a special GPS system for trucks/RV’s. We have a 13 foot RV and we have to make sure that we can get through areas with passes and bridges. When we put in the address we found online to get us to the campground, the address was wrong. We were on the west side of the park and the location we needed to be at was on the east side. We spent an additional 50 minutes traveling through the park to get to our destination.

We knew this place would be super hot and there was no pool. We warned the kids of no pool. The place we just left had the best pool and outdoor area. We also knew that we’d be in the car often and not exploring as much on trials. The first night we arrived, there was sooo much sand and the wind was blowing like crazy. We couldn’t even open our slide outs in our coach because it was blowing so bad. The property owners suggested to take a ride to the nearest town for some exciting places to eat and for entertainment. We drove 28 miles to a town that literally had nothing. Everyone in the town looked as if they were having a year long garage sale in their front yard. There was one gas station with one pump and a very small sub shop that was run down. We turned the Yukon around and headed back.

That night we slept horrible due to the wind and crazy weather. We had beautiful views out our window, but couldn’t get outside because of all the sand. When we woke up the next morning, we all had sand everywhere. The wind had stopped, but the sand was ALL OVER! Trying to take a dog to the bathroom in a sandstorm is also no fun! We had to put boots on Lucy each time she walked outside due to all the cactus and plants that ended up in her fur and feet.

The campground had a beautiful river walk that we enjoyed each evening when it wasn’t so hot and the wind wasn’t crazy. We also spent each calm evening having a fire and riding bikes.

One of our favorite things to do is to have a campfire. The girls love to make hot tea by the fire each evening on cool nights. We saw some of the best stars each evening.

These tumbleweeds were everywhere and would just fly through the campground. They were huge and would blow all over. On the night it was so windy, these were everywhere and some were at least 10 feet in the air floating. It was something we’d never witnessed before. We were excited for the next few days and hopefully no more wind.

  • Cold Case Mystery?

You all know how much we LOVE the Narrows in Zion National Park. When we were the furthest point in that we could hike, we decided to have a snack and take a break before turning around to head back. We knew we had to get back for the last shuttle pick up.

Eric and Brady decided to try to climb a huge waterfall and the other three kids were digging around near the base in the sand. I was just enjoying nature and the birds singing when all of the sudden Cam said he found a bone. I didn’t really pay much attention until he held it up. Immediately, I got goosebumps because this DID NOT look like the normal deer bone or animal bone you find out in the woods in Ohio. I grew up in a hunting family and I’ve seen my fair share of animal bones. This was something different than that.

The piece looked as if it was broken off from a longer bone and was buried about 6 inches from the surface in sand. I couldn’t wait for Eric to get back so I could show him what Cam found. The bone was pretty clean and looked exactly what I believe a human bone looks like on the inside and out. I’m not in the medical field, but it was just enough to make me freaked out.

The kids continued to look around for other bones and about a foot from the bone Cam found was a 18K gold plated necklace. Ellie came screaming to show me what was right next to the bone they found. I thought I was a bit freaked out when we found the bone, but after finding the necklace, that was a whole different level for me. It’s crazy how your mind begins to wonder when something like this happens. Could this be someone that was missing in Zion or possibly an animal that jumped a huge cliff and didn’t make it?

In this particular area, it floods often when it rains. I had all these assumptions in my head of what I thought happened.

We felt best to hold on to the bone and necklace and deliver it to a park ranger that night.

When we finished that day, we barely made it back to turn in our rental gear. Everything was closed. I told Cam to stick it in a ziplock bag, place it in his hiking bag, and we’d give it to a local park ranger in the park the next day. Only realizing that the next day, we’d be heading to our next national park. We placed the bone and necklace in the bottom bays of our bus and heading off to our next stop.

With all the excitement of getting to another favorite destination, and two out of four kids under the weather, I totally forgot about the bone. Two weeks later on our way to Teton National Park I realized the bone was still with us. I thought it was probably wise to get this out of our hands and to a park ranger. With us heading to Canada also, I didn’t want officials to question why we had a bone in our motor coach.

I called the visitor center in Teton National Park and asked to immediately speak to a park ranger. I told them the situation. Within minutes, someone was on their way to our location to gather information and get the bone. I had to give all of the details and location. I’ve never been in a situation like this before. It was a bit strange, but I told the deputy the entire story and handed over the bone and necklace. The deputy informed me that they would reach out to gather more information if they needed anything else. He did inform me that I could call to get an update on the case. We are very curious to find out what the updates are and if this will turn out to be a case of an unsolved mystery. My prayer is that if they do find that it’s a human bone, then it will lead a family to some answers.

We called a couple nurses and asked their opinions and sent pictures as well to them. Both professionals in the field believe that it looks just like an elbow bone. With the internet and all that has to offer, we were able to find what looks exactly like an elbow bone replica of a human online. What do you think? We will keep you all updated as we find out more information.

  • Bryce National Park

We’ve heard over and over that if we ever traveled out west again, then we’d have to make a stop at Bryce National Park. This park was full of wonder and we hardly have the words for how different it looks in such a great way. It almost feels like you are walking on a different planet when you are there.

The park itself isn’t that big, but it sure makes up for it in beauty. Eric and I found this fantastic app from a friend prior to us visiting all these national parks. It’s called the Guide Along App. In a nutshell, you pay a very small fee and get a tour guide talk to you as you drive through each park. We found out some really cool facts about the hoodoos and the park itself. It’s been a fantastic tool to teach all of us. The stories of ancient floodplains systems that occurred so long ago are fascinating. Every which way you look at the park you notice so many interesting views. The shuttle system was by far the best we’ve witnessed and each driver seemed like they loved their job. A huge win in today’s world.

We hiked 5 strenuous miles along the Queen’s Garden and the amphitheater. Lots of cute chipmunks lined the paths waiting for people to drop leftovers from snacks and lunch. That was Annie’s favorite part of the hike.

I am not a fan of heights, but felt like I was very much in control during this hike. It was extremely high, but felt okay compared to others I’ve attempted on this trip.

This was at the start of the 5 miles. We were excited but had no idea what we were in for. Thankfully we had cooling towels and lots of water. The temp was only 108 degrees!

My favorite hiking buddy! We’ve been on many hikes in the 19 years of marriage. We agreed this hike was one of our favorites from over the years. Added bonus of this hike was being with our four kiddos. I believe seeing this all through their eyes is the BEST PART!

Cam wanted to buy a camera stand for us to use on our trip. Best purchase yet instead of handing a stranger with sweaty hands our phones.

This is one of my favorite pictures of our hike views.

This tree was just perfect. Anyone that knows me knows I love pine trees and I wanted to take this one home for our yard.

These kids are such troopers. At this point in our trip we’ve put many miles on our hiking boots. We’ve had a few complaints, but mostly about how HOT it is. Lots of water and pool time after are always an added bonus.

Lunch on the road in the Yukon is probably a new favorite for us. We jam to our favorite christian music while taking in the beautiful views. Might I add that Eric hasn’t complained once about driving the thousands of miles on this trip.

We drove to the top/end of Bryce point. It was beautiful. In the background you can see mountains in California here. Thanks, God for all of this.

Back to our homestead for dinner on the Blackstone. Do you agree that campfire food/grilling tastes so much better? Cam LOVES to cook each evening with Eric.

Sweet Lucy stays back in the cool air condition each day. There are not many hikes she can go on. She watches her favorite dog shows until we return. She has been such a great addition on this trip. Eric and I look forward to our evening walks while the kids are winding down for the evening. She now knows that each night she gets to go for long walks with the two of us. We love her!

Take the time to visit Bryce National Park and make the memories.

  • Rest Day/Zion

We thought we were out of the woods with six days of antibiotics for Cam. Unfortunately, another kid bit the dust. So two more urgent care visits for swimmers ear. We realized it most likely came from the water at Sliderock. We traveled to Hurricane, UT and spent our morning getting all the meds to hopefully kick this terrible ear pain for the two kids.

It’s not often that these two get sick. With being up all night, we knew something more than over the counter meds were needed.

We decided to spend the day resting and hanging out at the RV. Eric spent the afternoon washing the bus. He’s always tinkering with something around here.

After a few hours of relaxing and some quick working ear drops, the kids were ready to head out again. We headed to our favorite place in Springdale. When we were on our last trip we stopped at this same place and fell in love with the pizza and enjoyed the company of our server. His name is Ryan. Brady actually remembered his name. He has so much knowledge of the area and our kids think he has the best outfits. We sat down at our table only to find out that he was our server again on this trip. Here is the link if you are in the area. If you love pizza, this place is for you. http://www.zionpizzanoodle.com

Thanks, Ryan for another fun experience. He’s fantastic!

After a fun dinner, the kids were ready for a bike ride in Zion. The views were incredible and the weather was perfect. Couldn’t have been a better ending to a long day. Forever thankful! Loving these days together as a family.

The kids chasing Eric and I’m always the caboose.

Stops like these were on the trail. Was I dreaming? It’s even more beautiful in person.

  • The Narrows-Zion National Park

Out of all the hikes we’ve completed over the years in different states, this hike is OUR FAVORITE! You don’t need a permit for this particular hike. On our last vacation out west two years ago we hiked about 5 miles in. We rented gear from http://www.zionoutfitters.com

We rented boots, neoprene socks, and hiking sticks. The package cost about $200 give or take for a family of six and totally worth every penny. We felt like it was nice not having to spend days drying out our hiking boots and the sticks were perfect for the rocks we had to climb over. The neoprene socks are an added bonus with the cold water. At some points we were neck deep in water, but it was so worth every cold shiver and second we were hiking. The great thing about renting from the company above is that we were able to pick up our gear the night before. We were all set and ready to go the following morning. We brought our packed snack boxes and we were ready for a great day.

First picture bright and early. The water temperature was a shocker at 7 a.m. The water temperature was 68 degrees.

This is the rental gear. I would never hike the Narrows without the gear above.

I can’t wait to frame this picture when we get home in August.

We are not the best at videos, but here are a few.
Listening to the birds sing and being in nature is my favorite.
This video isn’t the best but it was such a funny moment. We found this bird following our family and every time it would stop it would starting bobbing up and down as if it was dancing. Cam had to start singing to it and it danced along. You really can’t tell in the video, but that song was stuck in our heads the rest of the day. Leave it up to Cam to be silly. He’s always making us smile.
This was about 6 miles in. We had the whole area to ourselves for about two hours. We had to hike over about 15 waterfalls before getting to this point. It was breathtaking. This rock fell from above and landed in the perfect position. Look how small the boys are on the right compared to this BIG ROCK.
We hiked about 12 miles total that day. If you ever head to Zion, hike the Narrows. You won’t be disappointed.

  • Angel’s Landing Hike Zion National Park

If you’ve ever explored Zion National Park then you know about this hike. This hike is basically a 1,488 foot tall rock formation that leads to the most beautiful panoramic views of Zion Canyon.

If you feel the need to take on this extremely dangerous hike, then you will have to apply for a permit. I’ve heard in the past that they are often hard to secure. I had no problem at all securing a permit in the lottery system. Don’t take my word though. We talked to many people who have applied for years and never were able to get a permit for this hike. You can find more information about this hike and lottery/permit information at http://www.recreation.gov

We were given two permits for Eric and I to take on the hike together. I was a bit nervous and not certain I could handle the heights. As we were talking with the kids about it and sharing Youtube videos, our boys seemed all in. Eric decided to get up early one morning and try the hike by himself to see if he thought the boys could handle it. He came back from the hike saying it was one of the most unbelievable fun things he’s ever done and that if the boys were up for it, that he’d be happy to take them.

I then applied for the day before permits and was able to score a few more so Eric could take both boys. My momma heart was so nervous and I could barely sleep the night before. The boys packed water/snacks in their hiking bags and set out for the hike early in the morning. To my surprise, our boys were not nervous at all. They must have Eric’s hiking genes. 🙂 The picture below is at the parking lot.

Below are a few of my favorites of their day. Eric said it was one of the most memorable things he’s ever accomplished with the boys. I’m so glad he had this moment with them. I also love that the boys are old enough to remember this exciting moment.

No nerves at all. Yikes!!! I don’t think I could even attempt this.

They are almost to the top….

All smiles….so proud!!! These boys are my everything!

After 2.5 miles straight up and numerous chain holds, they made it to the top.

We had a fun girls day while the boys went hiking. Shopping and breakfast in Springdale with only the girls. With four kids it’s not often that we get to do things like this. I’m so thankful God gave us this morning. We talked, joked, and ate lots of yummy food. We sat and had iced coffee in the shade for an hour and just chatted away. I’ll never forgot this moment with my girls. Love them to pieces.

It’s crazy how tall Ellie is. She is towering over me now. Time slow down!

Breakfast at Porters in Springdale is a must. They have some of the best waffles we’ve tasted.

It was a morning well spent in one of our favorite spots in America. Zion National Park is a Meade favorite.

  • Canyon Overlook Zion Trailhead/Pool Day

We have been busy nonstop exploring all parts that Zion National Park has to offer. We had a snag in our plans though when Cam woke up with a terrible ear ache. After an online visit, we determined that he needed meds for swimmers ear. Not sure how an online health apt can determine this, but we were able to get meds. We decided to take it easy and just be. We let Cam rest most of the day and decided to head out for an evening sunset Canyon overlook hike. We heard from locals that this is the best place to see the sunset over the canyon. We loaded up our bags and heading out with a packed picnic dinner.

The hike ended right above this arch. It was a short mile hike but the views were worth it.

This view made me quite nervous. I tried to make it to the edge, but mentally I couldn’t do it. I love when I get pictures of the sun in the photos. The wind was insane.

This is probably one of our favorite spots in the park. The Altar of Sacrifice, Stained Wall, and West Temple are all present. I’m continued to be thankful that Biblical references are used throughout this park. God’s beauty is everywhere around.

Thank you Jesus for giving our family this wonderful trip. We are so very thankful.

Sweet Cam by the pool waiting for his ear to feel better.
